Non-Surgical Spondylolysis Treatment

Spondylolysis can cause some serious back pain, with certain bones in your vertebrae fracturing and potentially causing the two vertebrae to slide on each other. This is especially common in young athletes, since their spines aren’t all the way developed yet and are therefore a bit more fragile.

Treatment for spondylolysis can vary depending on how severe your case is. It can range from simply resting from painful activities to bracing the spine to surgery. It often gets better through conservative treatments, with surgery being saved for the worst-case scenarios.

Non-Surgical Spondylolysis Treatment Frequently Asked Questions

What is spondylolysis?

Spondylolysis is a break in the pars interarticularis of the vertebral arch, which can cause pain and instability. It often presents with pain on one side of the back, excessive rounding in the lumbar spine, pain that gets worse after activity, and a lower range of motion.

Where can you get spondylolysis?

You can get spondylolysis in the cervical spine (upper back/neck), but it’s much more common in the lumbar spine (lower back).

What causes spondylolysis?

Spondylolysis is usually caused by repetitive trauma – generally what happens in most sports! Younger athletes participating in things like volleyball, tennis, gymnastics, football, and other sports that require running/jumping are at more risk. It’s also suggested that there can be a genetic weakness that can put some people at a higher risk of getting spondylolysis.
