Joint inflammation (osteoarthritis) in the knees can be inconvenient at best and painfully debilitating at worst for those who suffer from it. Over 32 million people suffer from osteoarthritis in the United States, making it the most common form of arthritis.

There are several treatments available for osteoarthritis—one of which is Genvisc 850.

What Is Genvisc 850?

Genvisc 850 is a medication that can help relieve pain in the knee from osteoarthritis. It is injected into the knee(s) to treat stiffness and inflammation. Genvisc 850 belongs to a class of products known as hyaluronate, hyaluronan, hyaluronic acid, and sodium hyaluronate.

Hyaluronate is a naturally occurring substance in the knees that acts as a lubricant and shock absorber, which is vital for joint function. The process of injecting hyaluronate into the knees is also called viscosupplementation therapy.

How Does Genvisc 850 Work?

Your knee has something called synovial fluid which works to cushion the bones in the joints. Hyaluronate is the main component of synovial fluid. Osteoarthritis breaks down synovial fluid, so Genvisc 850 is meant to restore the synovial fluid, allowing for a healthier and more flexible joint.

Genvisc 850 is usually used in patients who have shown little or no response to other treatment options like acetaminophen, exercise, and physical therapy. Different patients will have different doses, but in general, adults will be given an injection once a week for a total of five injections.

What Are the Benefits of Genvisc 850?

  • Genvisc 850 has been published in more than 30 clinical studies.
  • It is demonstrably safe for repeat injection cycles and is free of avian proteins
  • Genvisc 850 is a highly effective treatment method—it provides significant pain relief for up to 6 months after the first injection cycle, and improves mobility and functional capacity.
  • Genvisc 850 is a non-surgical treatment.

How Fast Does Genvisc 850 Work?

Individual reactions to Genvisc 850 are subject to change depending on several factors like severity of osteoarthritis, pain, prior medical conditions, and more. Some patients may experience pain relief within the first week of getting the injection.

According to most clinical studies, however, most patients experience pain relief after the third week of receiving the injections.

Does Genvisc 850 Have Any Side Effects?

Genvisc 850 does not have any severe side effects, but some patients can experience a headache or pain, swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site.

If you start to experience any serious side effects like back pain, a severe headache, fever, or palpitations, contact your doctor.

What Should I Do After Getting an Injection?

It’s recommended that you don’t engage in any strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours after getting the Genvisc 860 injection. This includes exercise, sports, and heavy lifting. You can talk to your healthcare provider about the level of activity that will be right for you, but most patients are able to resume their daily activities in a couple of days.
